Catchy title, no? Although you may not be familiar with these advertising terms, they are very simple and being in-the-know can make you more money. Let’s start with definitions.

Fill and yield are basically the same thing. Fill is the percent of ad impressions that yield an ad. For example, if your site serves 1000 ads impressions, but the ad salesmen have only sold 800 ad impressions, your fill rate is 80%. What is served the remaining 20% (often called remnant inventory) is the default ad.

Fill is the percent of ad impressions that yield an ad.

You may already be familiar with CPM (cost per thousand) as a way of calculating how much you are earning on your page views, but let me explain that the TRUE amount you are earning is actually fill rate times CPM.

e is eCPM (effective or net CPM)
f is fill rate
c is CPM

Going back to our earlier example, if your ad network pays you $2 CPM, but has an 80% fill rate, then your effective earnings rate (eCPM) is $1.60 (not $2.00).

So what can be done? That’s where the default ad code comes to the rescue. When they don’t have a paid ad to serve, ad networks will serve either a PSA (public service announcements from the Ad Council) or a house ad promoting their ad network. Most ad networks, however, will serve any ad of your choice as the default instead of the PSAs.

So what makes a good default ad? A network with a high fill rate both here is in the states and internationally, such as Google AdSense or (cough, cough) the Feldman Blogger Ad Network (which is actually the Google AdExchange network.)

To implement a default ad, create the ad codes (in the control panel for AdSense or whatever ad network you choose) for all the different ad sizes you use. Most big ad networks have online control panels where you can then paste in the ad codes you just generated. If not, call or email your rep and tell them you want to give them default ad codes.

I am frequently asked, “Is my site big enough for advertising?” And the answer is, if you want to put ads on your site, there is NO MINIMUM traffic number. However, in practical terms, some networks will only accept sites of a certain size, while others frequently have a minimum payout. AdSense, for example, will roll over all monthly earnings until your balance is at least $100. So, in practical terms, you might only get one $100 check a year if your site was making, let’s say, $9 a month in advertising.

Estimating out how much you could make with advertising is nearly impossible, but here’s a rough guideline. Start by assuming you can earn $1 for every 1000 pageviews. This is called $1 CPM (cost per millle) because in Latin mille means thousand. So if your site gets 30,000 pageviews a month, that’s $30 per month.

OTOH, if you are in a higher-paying niche market (such as automobiles or mesothelioma lawyers) or you sell your ads directly, you can earn more than $1.

I’m not saying that most ad-supported sites earn only $1 CPM, but if you are looking for a wild guess, that’s a conservative place to start.

After all these years of publishing my own advertising-supported websites, I am now venturing into helping other bloggers and website owners with their own advertising. Google has just approved me (as a premium Google publisher) to add third-party websites to my network. Whoo!

What this means for you (maybe?) is the opportunity to have your website advertising space in front of thousands of agencies and buyers using the latest Google Ad Exchange technology, without having to worry about exactly how it all works.

Successful online advertising is a function of:

• traffic (monthly pageviews)
• ad placement (where your ads are on the page, how many are on a page, and what size your ads are)
• yield (how often a money-making ad is served in lieu of a non-paying backup ad)
• and market match (how well targeted the ads are to your audience)

In this article, I want to address ad placement, ad sizes and yield. Many studies have shown that ads above-the-fold perform better. I usually aim for two ads above-the-fold, and I’ll sometimes add a another ad below the fold (just below the main content or above the footer.) The best performing ad sizes are:

• medium rectangle: 300×250 pixels
• leaderboard: 728×90 pixels
• large rectangle: 336×280 pixels
• wide skyscraper: 160×600 pixels

The reason these are the BEST ad sizes is because they are big (in size) and they are popular, meaning that many, many, many advertisers use these sizes, and so your yield will INCREASE when using these ad sizes. If you use a less popular size, there will be fewer advertisers bidding on your ads. If you use smaller sizes, your ads won’t perform as well because they will be less visible to your visitors.

As far as recommended placements, this relates directly to both your web design, and how comfortable you are placing ads that mingle with your content. Many prefer to put ads away from the main content, which is of course your choice. But ads that are closer to the content do earn more money.
